Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect?

The first appointment usually lasts about 90 minutes. Dr. Duffy is a conventional veterinarian as well, and will perform thorough “Western” and TCVM examinations. A diagnosis will be made, the goals of treatment discussed, and a therapeutic plan will be determined. The first acupuncture treatment will be performed. Most patients require about 4 acupuncture treatments to see optimal results, though acute conditions may respond more quickly. Follow up appointments usually last 45-60 minutes, depending on the types of acupuncture used (dry needling, moxibustion, aqua-acupuncture, and/or electroacupuncture). Tui-Na may be performed during an acupuncture treatment, or may be scheduled as a separate session.

Will it hurt?

About 95% of patients are comfortable during acupuncture treatments, and many will even fall asleep. Once the points have been stimulated and a response has been achieved, most patients relax readily. It is Dr. Duffy’s utmost concern that her patients are comfortable, and not unduly stressed by the treatment. Adjustments can always be made to the treatment plan to ensure that this goal is achieved.

What should I do if my pet needs conventional medicine?

If your pet should require either conventional medical diagnostics or treatment, Dr. Duffy will recommend referral to your regular/referring veterinarian to have these procedures performed. In many instances, an integrated approach and treatment plan is most effective for optimal clinical results. Acupuncture is not suitable for patients who may be experiencing an emergency, or those with acute infectious disease or broken bones prior to stabilization. These patients should be evaluated and treated by a conventional veterinarian, and can then receive acupuncture to encourage healing. Acupuncture and herbal therapies can be used, with caution, in pregnant animals.
